The Association for Nature "Wolf" has published a new book entitled "Wilki na zachód od Wisły" [Wolves west to Vistula river]. The book has been written by Dr. Sabina Nowak and Dr. Robert Mysłajek, wolf specialists working for our association. The new publication describes results of 10 years of monitoring of wolf recovery conducted by AfN WOLF in Western and Central Poland, supported by IFAW and Euronatur. It includes maps of current wolf distribution in whole Poland and original photos of wild wolves living in the region. It also presents information on wolf ecology and conservation problems in our country.
From 1st of October 2010 to end of January 2011 Slovakian hunters hunt wolves. The hunting bag is established on 150 individuals from 350-400 wolves living in Slovakia. Shooting have also place near the Polish border, so all transborder packs are subject to severe reduction, even removal. Our studies in the Zywiec Beskidy Mts.(western-most part of Polish Carpathians) showed that strictly protected Polish wolf population serves as a source of new wolves for the exploited Slovakian population. Without this provisioning the intensive hunting in Slovakia would lead to the population collapse within few years. Such a practise is inconsistent with the Bern Convention and the Habitat Directive. Because the similar situation concerns the transborder bear population, AfN "Wolf"applied to Polish Minister of Environment for talks with Slovakian Ministry responsible for the large carnivores management.
In the end of 2010 Ministry of Environmental Protection of Lithuania increased hunting bag for wolves from 40 to 60 individuals and prolonged the hunting season from 4 to 5,5 months. Everything, what was achieved by NGO-s until 2005 year was canceled by the new Minister of Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas. Organization "Baltijos vilkas" ("Baltic Wolf") organized various actions against his decisions (press conference, petition with 8000 signatures sent to President of Country, Dalia Grybauskaitė, and even protest in the front of the Ministry of Environment building).
